In October 1963, a small group of people founded the IBM Poughkeepsie Employees Federal Credit Union. The credit union was established to provide a place where their members came first, not profits. Back then, their product line was modest, consisting of basic savings and consumer loans to Poughkeepsie IBM employees and their immediate families. By the end of their first year, the credit union had 14 member accounts and 172 dollars in assets.
To better meet the growing needs of the Hudson Valley, their field of membership expanded throughout the years so that they could service a larger portion of the community. In 1993, their name changed to Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union to better reflect their diversified membership.
In January 2003, the firm announced a change in their field of membership with the approval of a community charter. Obtaining the community charter was one of the most innovative events to happen to the credit union in their 40 year history. It allows all individuals who live, work, worship, volunteer or attend school in Dutchess, Ulster or Orange County to join HVFCU.
Today, HVFCU is a full service not for profit financial cooperative, offering their more than 171,000 members real estate and consumer loans, deposit accounts, and investment services.
