Cornell Abstract Company



Cornell Title and Abstract Company provide a full gamut of services including lein searches, abstract updates, and loan closings. The Company was located in Spirit Lake, in Northwest Iowa. Established in 1918 as the Dickinson County Abstract Company by H. E. Ilsley, H. E. Narey, C. E. Narey and others, the business name changed to Brainard Abstract Company in 1933 when W. A. Brainard purchased the company.
 
Robert R. Cornell joined Brainard Abstract Company in April of 1946 as a trainee following service work in the Navy. He was paid 90.00 dollars per month from the federal government under the G.I. Bill and 15.00 dollars per month from Brainard. Cornell purchased the business from Brainard in 1953.Tom Underwood joined Brainard Abstract in May, 1976, and acquired one-half interest in the business in 1978. The name was changed to Cornell Abstract Company in May, 1986, as a tribute to Bob Cornell’s longevity with the company.
 
American Land Title Association is the national trade association that represents and defends the title insurance industry. This association is responsible of improving the quality and business atmosphere of their members related to title insurance. ALTA members look for, evaluate and insure land titles to protect mortgage lenders and home buyers who invest in real state. Members could be builders, attorneys, developers, real state brokers, lenders, surveyors, consultants and related national trade associations. The association promotes many information activities and it is in touch with Congress to defend their position on legislative and regulatory matters.
