Texas Lawyers' Insurance Exchange is a Texas reciprocal insurance exchange which was founded in 1979. The Company is owned by its member insureds and is operated by a member elected board of directors. In the past 3 years, they have returned 8.25 million dollars to their members. They currently serve about 1200 member firms with 3500 attorneys.
The Company only provides insurance to lawyers and firms headquartered in Texas. The Company itself is an underwriter of professional liability insurance for attorneys and judges. They have relationships with numerous organizations which can provide excess and other types of insurance. The TLPIA, Texas Lawyer’s Professional Insurance Agency is a wholly owned subsidiary of the company and is a managing general agent. TLPIA has contracted Texas Associates to market a number of types of coverage.
There are a number of other types of insurance that are the State Bar of Texas Insurance Trust provides life, health and disability insurance for Texas attorneys and judges. They have no formal affiliation with the State Bar Insurance Trust. Texas Associates, an independent insurance agency, offers property and casualty insurance for attorneys and judges. The Company affiliates may receive a portion of commission from Texas Associates.
Their most legal malpractice policies require that you report as soon as practicable. Coverage can be excluded if you knew or should reasonably have known about the claim before purchasing the policy.
