Henry R. Stassen, Jr., a young immigrant farmer who came from Germany and settled in Monee, Illinois, founded Green Garden Mutual Insurance Company on March 23, 1867. Henry and eight other farmers from Green Garden Township started the Green Garden Mutual with the concept of neighbors, hand in hand, helping neighbors with the result of a lower insurance rate than that of the old-line Eastern insurance companies.
For the first 50 years, until 1917, all business was conducted in the German language. With the change to the English language, the Company continued to progress making policy and coverage changes as growing needs in the industry dictated. Through the growth and change, the constant has always been neighbor helping neighbor. In 1960 their first home office building was constructed. Then in 1992 their present home office was constructed to satisfy their need for additional space due to continued growth. At present, with all the changes that have taken place during their history, the company still goes back to its roots to serve others and help people restore their lives after a disaster strikes.
