The Utah Medical Insurance Association is a physician owned and directed healthcare liability insurance company. Practicing physicians are their foundation and strength. The Utah Medical Association formed the Utah Medical Insurance Association in response to a malpractice crisis in 1977. Faced with increased numbers and costs of malpractice claims, the commercial multi line insurance companies writing the business at that time responded by instituting substantial rate increases or withdrawing from the market. To provide stable, physician friendly liability insurance, UMIA was conceived and funded by Utah physicians.
UMIA is a mutual underinsurance exchange providing medical professional liability insurance and related products to health care providers in Utah, Nevada, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. The Association commenced business on December 1, 1978. UMIA is financially strong. As they enter their 20th year of service to physicians, UMIA holds 111.2 million dollars in assets and 27.1 million dollars of surplus. They are rated in the excellent category of Best Company and have been so for nine years.
